Pop culture blog Respect Authority was my first go at building a complete Wordpress theme from the ground up. The large scope of the blog's coverage also made for a pretty ambitious project. Ultimately, I strove for a balance between the site's text-heaviness and just enough eye candy to grab viewers' attention.
click to view siteI was a designer at Nerve.com for almost two years, and in the fall of 2007 the site was launching a number of new photoblogs. I was happy to work on a set of house ads for two of them; it was a fun little project. These are for the now unaffiliated Tokyo Undressed, which features photography by Rikki Kasso, a photographer working in, well, Tokyo.
click here to enlargeThis was the first set of Nerve's photoblog house ads, and they're for Chase Lisbon's blog. Chase is a photographer based in Baltimore. I really enjoyed designing these because I like his photography's style and tried to adopt its modern alt/punk focus for the designs.
click here to enlargeAmong my responsibilities at Nerve was the designing of the cover graphics for the various editorial content. One of Nerve's design standards is clean text that works within creative photography, so working on these increased my understanding of typography and representational imagery.
click here to enlargeNerve.com regularly publishes themed issues, where for a week or two much of the editorial content revolves around the theme. When the Music Issue premiered in the Fall of 2006, I was assigned to create a promotional email to interest advertisers and readers, and drive traffic to the articles.
click here to enlargeIn the Fall of 2006, Nerve launched a new website, the Film Lounge. As the name implies, this site's content was focused on movies, primarily indie films. Nerve sent out an email to promote the Film Lounge, and I was put in charge of creating it.
